Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now in force for many self-employed individuals and landlords.
Most sole traders and landlords with turnover above £50,000 in 2024/25 came within the regime from 6 April 2026.
Under MTD, digital records must be kept and quarterly updates submitted to HMRC using compatible software. This is a significant change from the previous system, where most information was reported after the tax year had ended.
The first quarterly update for the 2026/27 tax year is due by: 7 August 2026.
This deadline is approaching quickly, so records should be brought up to date well before then.
If we look after your bookkeeping or prepare your submissions, please make sure we receive your records in good time. Leaving this until the last minute increases the risk of delays, missing information or errors.
Please contact us as soon as possible if you are unsure whether MTD applies to you, what records you need to keep, or what information we need from you.
